A clogged nose (nasal congestion) is rarely just “too much mucus.” The primary mechanism is vasodilation and swelling of the nasal turbinates —bony, sponge-like structures inside your nose covered with erectile tissue (similar to that in the penis). When inflamed, these turbinates engorge with blood, narrowing or blocking the airway.
