She opened her back door. Beyond it lay a cobbled path, then a meadow, then a forest. She picked up Petal—the twelve-piston daisy—and carried it to the doorstep. She set it down facing outward. She turned its regulator to the lowest possible setting—a cycle of one hour per full wave.

Joric opened his ledger. The first page was blank save for a shimmering, questing line of text. "Let us begin. " lovely piston craft achievements

By noon, Joric's ledger had seven achievements. By evening, thirteen.

Then she started them together.

Elara blinked, wiping grease onto her apron. "Achievements?"

"I see," she said.

The sound was not noise. It was a chord. A brass-and-steel madrigal.
