“It sounds like you’re talking through a pillow,” Daniel groaned. He tapped the side of his head. A dull, thudding echo replied. The pressure was immense. He couldn’t pop them. He couldn’t yawn them open. He was living in a muted, underwater world.

“ You’re having a cold, ” the voice corrected. “ I’m Geri. I run the ferry service across your tympanic membrane. And your ear is currently in a lockdown because some genius decided to blow his nose too hard three days ago and sent a mucus tsunami into the middle ear valley. ”

And then he heard it.

“There are people in my ear,” Daniel whispered.
