The "M4P" stands for Modular 4-band Parametric . The "Dune" is not a Dune reference. It is literal. The unit was supposedly filled with a proprietary hydrophobic silica gel and coated in a ceramic-sand compound to prevent dust ingress and thermal overload. Only 47 units were ever produced. When the Cold War ended and the defense contract dried up, Mirage Acoustics allegedly destroyed the remaining stock and the schematics. But 47 units walked out the back door. Those 47 boxes are now the Holy Grail of analog signal processing. What does the Dune M4P actually do ? On paper, it is unremarkable: four fully parametric bands, 20Hz to 20kHz, +/- 18dB of gain, variable Q from 0.3 to 12. It has XLR in/out, a sidechain insert, and a power supply so large it requires a separate aviation-grade transformer.
Today, if you want a Dune M4P, you cannot buy one. There is no waiting list. There is no reissue. The original French factory is now a parking lot. The Dutch engineer who designed the gain cell reportedly died in 2009, and his notebooks were thrown away by his estate. There is a reason this feature is not accompanied by audio samples. The few owners of the M4P refuse to record direct line-out signals. They believe the unique distortion pattern is "fingerprinted"—that if a high-resolution sample were released, someone with a neural network and enough time could replicate the circuit digitally.
