Early 20th-century models posited that abstract art follows from failed naturalism. The Borneo data refutes this: (1) a 20,000-year gap exists between the last Naturalistic and first Schematic motifs; (2) Schematic art demonstrates its own sophisticated rules (symmetry, repetition, hierarchical scaling).
